Students in Ms. Kelly’s 8th grade Science Research class met with Malverne Mayor Tim Sullivan to discuss areas of local concern that may benefit from their advocacy, focus and research skills. Our discussions ranged from tree choices offered in the Village’s Tree and Beautification project to the drama surrounding a proposed pickleball court over at Westwood Park. We discussed water and road quality as well as Malverne’s response to a pending invasion by Spotted Lantern Flies.
We will be kicking off our research by conducting water testing via 9 different points (pH, hardness, and the levels of free and total chlorine, iron, copper, and nitrate and nitrite ions). Students are also planning to compile a list of native trees to be used in the Village’s Tree Program.
One of these projects may eventually be included in the application for the Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow competition.
