Lindner Place is now Acorn Way

Three photos of people rededicating the name of the school to Acorn Way thumbnail240518

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: “The time is always right to do what’s right.”

On Jan. 26, history was finally set right as Malverne’s Lindner Place was renamed Acorn Way.

This change was due to years of hard work by high school students who pushed the village to change the name of the street which was originally named over 100 years ago for a village founder who was also a Ku Klux Klan leader.

The street is home of to our very own Maurice W. Downing School, which was formerly called Lindner School prior to a name change. However, the street has remained named for the KKK leader, much to the dismay of the diverse Malverne community. Following a groundswell of support, including impassioned pleas from students and a public petition, the Malverne Village Board unanimously voted in September 2022 to rename Lindner Place as Acorn Way.

Today, with some of our current and former students who championed the change present to witness the historic moment in local history, the sign was replaced, and the street is officially named Acorn Way, a testament to the Malverne's motto, “Oaks from Acorns.”

Now that it has been removed, the original Lindner Place sign will be displayed in the Maurice W. Downing School library to preserve the past to remind people of what happened.

Learn more by watching this short video that was shown to all Malverne students today to give them history and context about the street renaming.

Congratulations to all who made the annual Malverne Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration a spectacular success, including the incredible members of the community to joined together in strength and solidarity to honor the life and legacy of MLK!

Our night got off to a rousing start thanks to the soaring voices of Faith Eliely and Lauren Barrett.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lewis told us about Dr. King’s passion and sacrifice and how his actions on May 12, 1965 opened the doors to racial integration in the Malverne and Lakeview community and changed our district forever.

The Herber Video Production Class put together an amazing video tribute to MLK, complete with historic footage of Dr. King’s visit to Malverne in 1965 and interviews with faculty and students telling us how MLK’s works impact their life each and every day.

The Lions Cheerleaders showed what freedom means to them with an exciting dance routine and the Davison Avenue Glee Club and Downing Performers closed out the evening with their amazing voices that filled the air with love and hope!

Special congratulations go out to our MLK Jr. Humanitarian Award honorees Dr. Vincent Romano and Coach Tyrell Wilson who both contribute so much to the Malverne community with their words and actions. We are so grateful for your service to our students!
