Keeping Our Students Safe and Healthy in the Water This Summer

As warmer weather arrives and families spend more time outdoors, our school district wants to encourage everyone to keep water safety at the top of mind. Swimming, splashing in spray grounds and visiting local beaches are wonderful ways for children and teenagers to stay active, but taking a few essential precautions can make all the difference in preventing accidents and injuries.
To help our community stay informed, we encourage all families to review the resources and practical guidance provided by the New York State Department of Health Safe and Healthy Swimming Portal.
Key Water Safety Reminders for Families
Active adult supervision remains the single most critical factor in keeping young children safe near water. Lifeguards are an invaluable resource at public facilities, but they are not a substitute for continuous direct observation by a parent or guardian. When supervising young children or non-swimmers, adults should always remain within arm's reach.
It is also vital to remember that air-filled swimming aids like water wings or inflatable tubes are fun pool toys, but they do not replace Coast Guard-approved life jackets. If your child relies on a flotation device, ensure it is properly fitted and designed for safety. Parents of older students and teenagers are encouraged to talk with their children about the dangers of swimming alone, diving into shallow or unfamiliar waters and swimming in natural bodies of water without a lifeguard present.
By staying proactive and practicing simple water safety habits, we can ensure our entire school community enjoys a safe, healthy and refreshing season.
